St George's HILL

CHALLENGE

Our clients' beautiful home on St George's Hill featured a stunning lower ground floor terrace beside their swimming pool, the kind of space that should have been an absolute showstopper. Instead, it sat completely empty and underutilized, a real missed opportunity given its prime location and potential.

The terrace faced several practical challenges that made traditional landscaping impossible. Being on the lower ground floor meant severely limited natural light, not enough for real plants to thrive. There was no irrigation system, and this was their second home, meaning infrequent visits and no possibility of regular maintenance.

They needed a solution that would look stunning year-round, require zero maintenance, work in low light conditions, and create visual interest enhancing both the outdoor experience and interior views, transforming this dead space into something sophisticated, serene, and effortlessly elegant.

BEFORE & AFTER

PROCESS

During our initial consultation, we photographed the terrace from multiple angles, considering how the space would look during different times of day and seasons. We developed comprehensive visual proposals showing how carefully chosen plants and planters could completely transform the area. Rather than flat, single-height planting, our design strategy centered on building layers, from ground-level textures up to eye-level focal points that would look beautiful both when you were actually on the terrace and when viewed from inside the house.

RESULTS

The final design we developed together centered around a stunning trio of bespoke acer trees that became the absolute stars of the transformation. We mixed elegant tall pieces that created graceful vertical elements with gorgeous bonsai-style plants that added authentic Japanese garden influence. We incorporated flowing textural grasses that added gentle movement and softness, along with rich pine stems that provided deep color contrast. The plant selection created beautiful seasonal interest, even though everything was preserved, the varied textures and colors gave the impression of a garden that evolved throughout the year. Our planter selection balanced clean contemporary lines that echoed the modern architecture with more organic, textured pieces that softened the overall feel.

The transformation was absolutely spectacular. Whether they were swimming, relaxing on the terrace, or simply enjoying the view from their living room, the space now offered layers of visual interest and sophisticated natural beauty. It was exactly the kind of effortless luxury solution that a prestigious second home deserves stunning, maintenance-free, and perfectly suited to their lifestyle.
