We were approached by Truman Brewery to create bespoke hanging gardens for their extensive warehouse space, a truly exciting brief but one that came with significant design challenges. The sheer scale of the warehouse meant we were working with vast, soaring spaces that felt completely empty and devoid of life.
We were given specific measurements and guidelines to work within, but the real challenge was creating installations that would have substantial visual impact in such a cavernous environment. Whatever we designed needed to be bold enough to register against the dramatic industrial architecture, yet sophisticated enough to enhance rather than compete with the beautiful existing brickwork and timber features that gave the space its character.
THE SPACE
The installations also needed to work as individual pieces while creating a cohesive feeling throughout the warehouse. Each hanging garden had to be unique and interesting in its own right, yet contribute to an overall atmosphere that would transform this stark industrial space into something more inviting and alive.
OUR PROCESS
Working within their specifications, we created a series of one-off hanging garden pieces, each completely different in design and character. Rather than repeating identical installations, we crafted individual compositions that would create visual variety and interest as people moved through the warehouse space.
Each piece was covered and filled with carefully selected jungle-like trailing plants and stems that created dramatic cascading effects. We chose varieties that would drape and flow beautifully, creating movement and organic softness against the hard industrial surfaces. The trailing elements were crucial, they needed to be lush and substantial enough to make a real impact in such a large space.
THE RESULTS
The transformation exceeded expectations. The rich greenery looks absolutely fabulous against the warehouse's existing brickwork and woodwork, creating this wonderful contrast between industrial heritage and natural beauty. Each hanging garden became a focal point in its own right while contributing to an overall atmosphere that completely changed how the space felt.
The installations brought life and warmth to what had been a stark, empty warehouse, creating intimate moments of natural beauty within the grand industrial architecture. We were delighted with how the bespoke approach allowed each piece to have its own personality while working together to transform the entire environment.
